Questions to Ponder

1. If the Law is perfect (Psalm 19:7)

The Law of the LORD is perfect,
reviving the soul;
the testimony of the LORD is sure,
making wise the simple;

why would YHVH need to change it?

2. If the Law gives liberty (Psalm 119:44-45)

So I will keep Your Law continually,
Forever and ever. And I will walk at liberty, For I seek Your precepts.

James 1:25

But the one who looks into the perfect Law, the Law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.

why do we call it bondage and seek to be free from it?

3. If heaven and earth are still here,  (Matthew 5:17-19)

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

how could the Law be done away?

4. If our Savior is the Word (Revelation 19:11-16)

Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself. He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God. And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses. From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.

and is the same yesterday, today and forever (Hebrews 13:8)

Jesus Christ, yesterday, and to day; and the same for ever.

how can we say the Word changed?

5. If Paul said the Law is not void (Romans 3:31)

Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the Law.

and that we are to continue in the Law (2 Timothy 3:14-17)

But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of Godb may be competent, equipped for every good work.

why would we teach differently?

6. If Paul said he taught and obeyed Moses (Acts 21 and 24)

…They are all zealous for the Law, and they have been told about you that you teach all the Jews who are among the Gentiles to forsake Moses, telling them not to circumcise their children or walk according to our customs. What then is to be done? They will certainly hear that you have come. Do therefore what we tell you. We have four men who are under a vow; take these men and purify yourself along with them and pay their expenses, so that they may shave their heads. Thus all will know that there is nothing in what they have been told about you, but that you yourself also live in observance of the Law… Then Paul took the men, and the next day he purified himself along with them and went into the temple, giving notice when the days of purification would be fulfilled and the offering presented for each one of them.

And when the governor had nodded to him to speak, Paul replied:

“Knowing that for many years you have been a judge over this nation, I cheerfully make my defense. You can verify that it is not more than twelve days since I went up to worship in Jerusalem, and they did not find me disputing with anyone or stirring up a crowd, either in the temple or in the synagogues or in the city. Neither can they prove to you what they now bring up against me. But this I confess to you, that according to the Way, which they call a sect, I worship the God of our fathers, believing everything laid down by the Law and written in the Prophets, having a hope in God, which these men themselves accept, that there will be a resurrection of both the just and the unjust. So I always take pains to have a clear conscience toward both God and man. Now after several years I came to bring alms to my nation and to present offerings. While I was doing this, they found me purified in the temple, without any crowd or tumult. But some Jews from Asia— they ought to be here before you and to make an accusation, should they have anything against me. Or else let these men themselves say what wrongdoing they found when I stood before the council, other than this one thing that I cried out while standing among them: ‘It is with respect to the resurrection of the dead that I am on trial before you this day.’”

why do we say he doesn’t?

For the assembly, there shall be one statute for you and for the stranger who sojourns with you, a statute forever throughout your generations. You and the sojourner shall be alike before the LORD.

The sum of Your word is truth,

but his delight is in the Law of the LORD, and on his Law he meditates day and night.

119:70,

Their heart is covered with fat,
But I delight in Your Law.

119:77,

May Your compassion come to me that I may live,
For Your Law is my delight.

119:92,

If Your Law had not been my delight,
Then I would have perished in my affliction.

119:174

I long for Your salvation, O LORD,
And Your Law is my delight.

Romans 7:22

For I delight in the Law of God, in my inner being.

12. If we are to walk in the Law (Deuteronomy 10:12-13)

“And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways, to love Him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments and statutes of the LORD, which I am commanding you today for your good?

and our Messiah did (1 John 2:5-6)

but whoever keeps His Word, in Him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in Him: whoever says he abides in Him ought to walk in the same way in which He walked.

Be followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.

Psalm 112:1

Praise the LORD!
Blessed is the man who fears the LORD,
who greatly delights in His commandments!

Matthew 5:5

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

James 1:25

But if you look carefully into the perfect Law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.

1 Peter 3:13-15a

Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. “Do not fear what they fear; do not be frightened.” But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord.

Revelation 22:14

Blessed are they that do His commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

then why wouldn’t we want to obey it?

why do we?

16. If our Messiah said to do what is taught from Moses seat (Matthew 23:2,3), which is the Law,

The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat: All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.

why do we refuse?

17. If Paul said he taught and did the Law (Acts 21:20, 26 and 24:13-14)

…They are all zealous for the law, and they have been told about you that you teach all the Jews who are among the Gentiles to forsake Moses, telling them not to circumcise their children or walk according to our customs. What then is to be done? They will certainly hear that you have come. Do therefore what we tell you. 25:8

Paul argued in his defense, “Neither against the Law of the Jews, nor against the temple, nor against Caesar have I committed any offense.”

how is he against it?  He defended himself against the claims that he taught against the law, must WE continue to accuse him?

18. Peter said that lawless, ignorant and unstable people twist Pauls’ words to their own destruction (2 Peter 3:14-17)

Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace. And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him, as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures. You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability.

– what does that mean?

19. How can we say we know/love God if we do not obey His commandments? (1 John 2: 4)

For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.

20. If the test for a false Prophet is found in Deuteronomy 13:1-5,

“If a prophet or a dreamer of dreams arises among you and gives you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or wonder that he tells you comes to pass, and if he says, ‘Let us go after other gods,’ which you have not known, ‘and let us serve them,’ you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams. For the LORD your God is testing you, to know whether you love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul. You shall walk after the LORD your God and fear him and keep his commandments and obey his voice, and you shall serve him and hold fast to him. But that prophet or that dreamer of dreams shall be put to death, because he has taught rebellion against the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt and redeemed you out of the house of slavery, to make you leave the way in which the LORD your God commanded you to walk. So you shall purge the evil from your midst.

how could Jesus or Paul teach against the Law and not be a false prophet?

21. If Paul says in Romans 7 that the Law is spiritual, good, righteous and holy and that our flesh is not good and does not want to obey the Law, but that in his inner being he delights in the Law and with his mind he serves the Law, doesn’t that show that if we don’t want to obey the Law, it is our flesh speaking?
